Information & Communication Systems Laboratory
Age of information measures how old the data at a receiver is. We compute it for queues, sensor networks, and gossip networks, and design update and scheduling policies that keep it small under limits on bandwidth, energy, and delay.
Age of InformationA sender who observes the state and a receiver who acts on it often want different outcomes. Starting from Bayesian persuasion, we ask what the sender should disclose, and when, once messages are delayed, noisy, or costly to send.
Optimization & ControlOpinions move through a network as neighbours keep talking to each other. We model that spread, including when some sources are wrong, and study which agents to seed and how quickly correct information has to arrive to stay ahead of a rumour.
Misinformation
Dr. Baştopçu's research concerns how systems should decide what to transmit, when to transmit it, and how much accuracy to sacrifice for speed. His work spans information theory, queueing, and networked optimization, with recent attention to timeliness in gossip networks and in LLM inference systems.
Before joining Bilkent, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

We are looking for graduate and undergraduate students interested in information theory, queueing, optimization, and the design of timely communication systems. Strong mathematical preparation matters more than prior publications.
Prospective students should email a CV, transcript, and a short paragraph on which of our papers they found most interesting and why.
